Hospice Partners of America selected Serenity Hospice as one of its two 3rd Quarter Exceptional Story Runner Ups for care they provided for one of their recent patients. Each quarter, Hospice Partners of America asks staff members to submit stories of exceptional care that was provided to patients and families, and selects one winning team and two runner ups. The Serenity Hospice Portland team was one of this quarter’s runner ups. Congrats to our Social Worker Rachel White, our Massage Therapists Jason Mayberry and Kimberly Nistad, and our Nurse Lyn Sparks for their tireless commitment to their community.

One of Serenity’s patients had a real love of the outdoors. His favorite memories were hiking, fishing, gardening and camping. As he aged and because of his illness, he required help taking care of himself.  He didn’t have relatives nearby so he moved into a local nursing home. The nursing home was situated near the center of the city’s downtown and it was not easy for him to access the outdoors.

When Serenity Hospice began providing him care, they discovered his love of nature and decided to plan a special day for him. They rented a wheelchair van and headed to Mount Hood National Forest. As they hiked, the patient shared where to find wild huckleberries, which maple saplings to use for smoking meats, and how to access private swimming holes. As fate would have it, along the journey that day, they ran into one of his old friends that he had not seen in decades. The two friends reconnected and the day ended with a picnic and some fishing.

Serenity Hospice was honored to be able to share this special day with one of their patients. There is nothing more rewarding for our team than to help grant end-of-life wishes. It is our priority to make sure patients enjoy life to its fullest, even when the end may be near.

Thank you Portland team for sharing your Exceptional Story!
